Records of the Lerner Marine Laboratory consist primarily of financial papers such as correspondence with contributors, contributor lists, bank statements, check stubs, bills and financial reports. Other papers encompass reports concerning research, facilities and the environment in which the laboratory is located; information regarding symposia held at the laboratory; letters of application from potential researchers; newsletters; and publicity news clippings and brochures about the laboratory. Correspondence of founder Michael Lerner concerning establishment of laboratory, fund raising, and other topics; and correspondence of resident director, Robert F. Mathewson, regarding its operation. Photographs depict facilities and activities of researchers. Correspondence concerning fund raising in hopes of preventing laboratory's closing and correspondence regarding associated issues.
